Do you ever find that you really, really like something but really don’t want it? Especially when it comes to cars/pets? For me, the car I like but don’t want is the Aston Martin Lagonda. They’re odd-looking in a beautiful way, elegant as can be, technologically stunning on the inside, and crazy unreliable with electronics that seem to not work even if the car is in absurdly good shape. I love it, but I am content to admire it from a distance. T he same thing goes for birds. Birds are my favorite animals, but I don’t quite understand the appeal of having one as a pet. They’re noisy, messy, often fussy... Some of them can do a few tricks, but mostly they’re just nice to look at. And they live for a freaking long time. Which appeals to some people, but not me. I’ll happily watch birds in nature and enjoy learning about birds, but dogs and cats make much better pets IMO. They’re cute, lovable, AND entertaining!

So what are those cars/animals for you?

That goofy guy on the Internets gets a hold of a Lagonda and reviews it.

Dogs.  They appear to be very friendly and sociable, but I have no desire to have one. There is a yellow lab in the house behind me named Thor. Nice dog. Very friendly.  He can stay there.

Raccoons. They take “nothing is husky proof” to a whole new level but damn are they adorable.

Any mustang, any year. I love the old K codes, the fast backs, the notchback fox bodies, the latest coyote engines. They’re great. I’m just not a mustang guy.

Seconded with the bird as a pet.

As far as stuff that’s financially attainable for me, I’d say any old Rolls-Royce (Silver Shadow/Silver Wraith/Silver Spur/Silver Spirit), because the very reasonable purchase price is just a downpayment on total ownership cost, and old British cars are very needy. Plus, you don’t want to attempt cheap, improvised fixes on that sort of car.

For animals, probably a husky. They’re smart, beautiful, and have great personalities, but I’m a lazy, lazy man. I could never deal with the constant exercise and house cleaning needs that would come with one.

Probably the Lambo Diablo. They were all the rage when I was a kid, but Lambos in general are not really my cup of tea anymore.

Jag XJR. They’re dead sexy, but terribly finicky. I’ll just admire them from afar.

Any pet, really. I’m just recently dogless after having dogs for the last 12 years, and always having cats and dogs growing up... I’m waiting on the carpet cleaners to get here next week to get the yellow stains out of the carpet, and I’m kinda enjoying the lack of barking and begging and getting into everything  and soforth. I think I'm ready to admit I'm not a pets person.

I saw an Alfa Quadrifoglio rolling down the road under it’s own power and was like, “What? How? THE MATRIX HAS BEEN HACKED”

Came here to say this. Saw one with black wheels and their tri-coat red yesterday; driver opened it up a bit leaving the stop sign and my goodness what a sound.  Every. Single. Time. I wonder what’d it’d be like...

Alfa...not even once.

Probably half the Instagram accounts I follow are Shiba Inus, but I can’t see myself ever getting one. You pretty much have to get one from a breeder and from just about everything I’ve heard they’re little shits.

For cars, Alfa 75 all the way

I agree with you on the Shiba Inu. Akitas as well. I think Akitas are some of the cutest dogs, but from what I read they’re very antisocial.

Strangely, I would freaking love a Tatra 603. I t probably is indeed a pain to own, but if you’re into weird cars (like me), it doesn’t get much more “alternate reality” than a 603. No idea how you would get parts for it, though...

Certainly, if you want one, it will require a lot of your attention. I like dogs for a minute or two at at time. My wife had two, and as a member of the pack myself, I am now required to dog.

Yup. That’s why I love and don’t want the Lagonda. Doug goes for really good condition cars, and if the electronics are that bad in a good one...

I don't know. That sounds like the epitome of what you are asking here. An absurdly difficult to keep on the road alternate universe executive sedan? Fun to ride in not to own.

The electronics were that bad in a new  one. So much weirdness about that car, but still sort of cool looking in profile. Tall tires with lots of sidewall is what I like. Low profile tires would be an interesting look.

I just watched (most of) this again. Doug actually does a pretty good job. The car is weird but fascinating.

Any Dodge Viper. I love vipers especially the second gen for nostalgia reasons, but I have zero interest in owning one.

Kinja'd!!!

As for animals. A chinchilla. Love them, but according to a friend that owned one they are a PITA to own and take care of.

It’s definitely not an “only vehicle” kind of car. The only point at which I’d consider owning one would be after already building up a fairly large car collection. With driving duty spread out over several vehicles, that takes the pressure off the Tatra to work properly all the time. That way, if it develops a problem that means I can’t drive it, so what? I could afford to wait awhile for replacement parts.

While it would be great to do this every day,

I can’t imagine a single circumstance where a Tatra 603 would be feasible as an only car.

Stastnou cestu has always been and will forever be my favorite car advertisement... If I ever do end up with a Tatra 603, I want it p ainted like the one in that ad.

I heard they can just sort of fall down mountains unharmed. Communist advertising didn't have any consumer protection, so it has to be true. I'll go try it right now with my 603 I never told anyone about.

This. I want to play with other people’s dogs . I don’t want to walk them and constantly clean up after them.

I had a few years with caged animals and that was OK, but after having kids I no longer have the time for more than 1-ish hobby (cars).
